Project Case Study

West Cunningham Street Parking Garage

The garage, built in 1975, was showing its age. Concrete decks were saturated with chlorides and past the point of repair. The elevator needed replacing. The exterior facade panels, which were coated with an asbestos containing material, were rusted and needed replacing. Additionally, the structural steel was severely rusted needed of painting.

During the summer of 1997 Nathan Contracting was awarded the contract to rebuild the structure. Approximately 75,000 square feet of concrete deck surfaces were replaced, the remaining concrete was sounded and delaminated surfaces repaired as directed by the Engineer. This was accomplished before the winter weather shut the project down.

During the winter a new hydraulic elevator was installed and the lighting system revamped. As temperatures warmed the exterior facade panels were removed and sandblasting and painting of the existing lead containing structural steel coating system proceeded as a full abatement project. New facade panels were installed and color coordinated with the structural steel painting system. All new and existing deck surfaces (110,000 sq. ft.) were coated with a non-skid, traffic bearing waterproofing system designed to keep out the elements and de-icing salts. The garage, which opened in the fall of 1998, is now ready for the next century.
